Lobbying Europe - for NGOs

Many of the laws we implement in Ireland have a European dimension. Unfortunately many NGOs fail to realise the opportunities open to them to contribute to policy making, with the result that they become only actively involved in campaigning for or against a piece of legislation when it is close to being ratified at a national level.

However in the European Institutions, like the European Parliament, European Commission and Council of Ministers, well organised NGOs can have a powerful voice and can make a real difference in producing the fairest legislation.

This website is intended to introduce you to some of the opportunities to contribute to forming legislation at a European level.

How the EU Works

The key to getting the most out of the European Union (EU) is to understand how it functions.

The EU operates through a system of institutions which relate to each other in different ways to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. Understanding how the EU works is vital to understanding how to affect EU decision-making.
