Many of the laws we implement in Ireland have a European dimension. Unfortunately many NGOs fail to realise the opportunities open to them to contribute to policy making, with the result that they become only actively involved in campaigning for or against a piece of legislation when it is close to being ratified at a national level.
However in the European Institutions, like the European Parliament, European Commission and Council of Ministers, well organised NGOs can have a powerful voice and can make a real difference in producing the fairest legislation.
